4 Things I Would Not Buy as a Naturopath
November 20, 2025

I spend a lot of time researching ingredients, reading labels, and making sure products and foods truly support wellness. But even during a regular grocery shop, I often see foods that look healthy on the surface yet don’t actually support long-term health. So let me share a few things that never make it into my trolley (and what I reach for instead).
1. “Low-Fat” or “Lite” Yoghurt
"Low-fat” sounds healthy, but most varieties replace fat with sugar or artificial sweeteners. This can cause blood sugar spikes, leave you feeling hungry again soon after, and doesn’t deliver the nutrients your body needs.
🛒 What I buy instead:
Full-fat, natural yoghurt. It’s creamy, satisfying, and those healthy fats help you absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K.
2. “Fruit” Snacks for Kids
These bite-sized snacks are often just concentrated fruit juice and sugar in disguise. Without fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants, they’re closer to lollies than real fruit.
🛒 What I buy instead:
Real fruit such as fresh, frozen, or freeze-dried options. It’s naturally sweet, nutrient-rich, and just as fun for little ones.
3. “Spray-On” Cooking Oils
Even when labelled as olive oil, most spray oils include propellants or additives that can oxidise during cooking, compromising the oil’s quality and health benefits.
🛒 What I buy instead:
Cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil. Simple, real, and far better for your body.
4. Synthetic Multivitamins or Iron Supplements Containing Iron Oxide
This one surprises people. Not all supplements are created equal. The body doesn’t always recognise or effectively use synthetic isolates, and iron oxide in iron supplements is a red flag for me. It’s poorly absorbed, can irritate the gut, and often does more harm than good.
🛒 What I choose instead:
Wholefood-based nutrients. They’re far more bioavailable, gentle on digestion, and supportive for long-term wellbeing.
Final Thoughts
Healthy choices don’t have to mean perfection. When you understand what’s really in your food, it becomes easier to make swaps that nourish your body and mind.
