Nutrition for Kids: Our 5 Top Tips With Nutritionist Lisa Baker
September 27, 2022
Have you ever wondered if you're doing enough for your kids' health and nutrition? Don’t worry, so has almost every other parent ever. Our resident nutritionist and mumma Lisa Baker has come up with 5 clever tips to encourage healthy eating for kids.
Nutrition for kids doesn’t have to be boring, and getting kids to enjoy those all-too-important fruits and veggies (believe it or not) can be made fun, especially with a little creativity and some extra nutritional support when needed.
Try incorporating one at a time, remember, each child is different and learning a healthy habit takes time, so don’t be too hard on yourself. You’re doing great!
Make Healthy Eating for Kids Fun!
Making mealtimes fun is a great way to encourage healthy eating for kids. Sometimes this can mean getting creative and turning your meals into playful works of art (The Nutritious Land Before Time is one of our recent favourites).
When it comes to kids' health, sometimes it just means that you need to bring some fun and imaginative energy to the table. Keeping the energy light, fun and playful can encourage kids to try new things and get involved.
Nutrition for kids isn’t just about what goes onto the plate today, it’s also about helping children develop positive mealtime experiences and healthy eating habits over time.

Practice Repetition for Kids Health
Do your kids constantly reject certain foods? It’s frustrating, right?!
Well, don't give up (unless they are allergic or it actually makes them sick). Rather than not buying that food anymore, try serving smaller portions regularly, alongside foods that your kids have already deemed “acceptable.”
Seeing a food over and over again can help make it more familiar, while smaller portions can make it feel less intimidating. Eventually, your little one may just surprise you and decide that the food they once rejected is actually pretty good!
Promote Kids Nutrition through Colour
The dinner plate is no place for an aesthetically pleasing neutral palette when it comes to healthy eating for kids. You want that plate to explode with colour.
The more colourful the better. Different coloured fruits and vegetables contain different naturally occurring nutrients and plant compounds, so including a variety of colours is a simple way to add variety to your child's diet.
And kids are often drawn to colourful foods, so why not have a little fun with it?
If they are eating colour, they are eating healthy (unless it's lollies – that's definitely not what we mean. The colour has to come from nature, not artificial colours and flavours!).

Add in some Superfoods for Kids
There's nothing wrong with a little extra nutritional support to help complement your child's diet. Do your kids just flat-out reject vegetables, but think pasta is fine? Well, puree up as much veggie action as you can and coat the pasta in the veggie sauce. You just do what you gotta do sometimes.
Nutrition for kids by stealth was a huge part of the inspiration behind our Kids Range. Each product is designed to make adding a little more nutrition to everyday food and drinks simple and delicious.
In an ideal world, our kids would be eating all the fruit and vegetables by choice. In a less-than-ideal world, it's good to have a few tricks up our sleeves.

Nutrition for Kids Takes Time (so take it!)
Sometimes this one is easier said than done, but it still needs to be said.
Take your time around mealtime! To encourage healthy eating and positive relationships with food, the feeling of rushing needs to go.
Especially with really small kids, food and eating is an exploration and learning process. Having one foot out the door when you're trying to get everyone fed is a recipe for disaster.
Allowing time for kids to try a little bit of this and that during mealtimes and throughout the day can help make eating a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.
And yes, it may result in a messy home, but these tips are all about nutrition. The house can wait.
